Through East Africa’s Reserves 10 DAYS
You are here: Home / Africa / Tanzania / Kenya and Tanzania Wildlife Circuit

Kenya and Tanzania Wildlife Circuit

OVERVIEW

The only thing better than a trip to Kenya or Tanzania, is a trip combining both iconic safari destinations. Although the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are essentially one large park, separated only by the border between the two countries, they both have very distinct attributes. This journey seamlessly wends its way from the Mara to Serengeti and then on to Ngorongoro in the space of just 10 days, for a seminal East African experience. If you’d like time to unwind in Zanzibar, that can easily be added onto the end of this trip.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 • Arrival in Nairobi
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your hotel. Overnight at Nairobi Tented Camp .
Day 2 • Nairobi to Maasai Mara
Today you will be transferred to Wilson airport in time for your flight to the Maasai Mara. The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is home to the greatest concentration of large mammals and is widely recognized as Africa’s ultimate wildlife reserve. The park is the northern extension to the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, famous for its annual migration of wildebeest. This is a spectacular place of breathtaking sceneries, never-ending plains and the most abundant variety of wildlife remaining anywhere in the world. The landscape is made up of rolling savannahs dotted with patchy shrubs and bush thickets. Overnight at Mara Serena Lodge . Approximate driving time: 5 hours .
Days 3 and 4 • In the Maasai Mara
You will have two days to explore this reserve in some depth. You will have the chance to see elephant, giraffe, prides of lion, and thousands of impala, topi, grants and Thomson’s gazelle. Birds are prolific including immigrants, 450 bird species have been recorded among them 57 birds of prey. The Mara is the scene of annual migration of millions of wildebeest up from the Serengeti plains in search of water and grasses. While in Mara, you will have the option to float above the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem on board a hot air balloon followed by a gourmet champagne breakfast. You can also visit a Maasai tribal village and enjoy entertainment by Maasai dancers. Overnight on both nights at Mara Serena Lodge .
Day 5 • Fly from the Maasai Mara to Serengeti
After breakfast at the lodge, you will be transferred to the local airstrip in time for your flight to the Serengeti National Park. On arrival, you will be met by a representative and transferred to the lodge in time for lunch. An afternoon game drive will take you into the heart of the Serengeti where you may spot herds of wildebeest, zebra, hyena, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhinoceros, hippos, buffalo, jackals, and gazelles. The Serengeti is also a great place to see lions. Overnight at the Serengeti Serena Lodge .
Days 6 and 7 • Explore the Serengeti
The next two full days will be spent exploring Serengeti’s 5,600 square miles for a chance to see cheetah, giraffe, lion, leopard, elephant – the list is endless. Each year it is the scene of the great migration where millions of wildebeest and zebra make their annual trek in search of fresh grass. Overnight at Serengeti Serena Lodge .
Day 8 • Serengeti to Ngorongoro
After breakfast, start the drive to Ngorongoro Conservation area via Olduvai Gorge, where famed archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the fossilized remains of the earliest known man, believed to be about 1.8 million years old. You will have plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing en route to your accommodation on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Arrive in time for lunch at the lodge and then have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge . Approximate driving time: 4 hours
Day 9 • In the Ngorongoro Crater
Depart after breakfast for a half-day game drive on the crater floor. Within the walls of the crater lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake, inspiring continual migration of animals and you will have the opportunity to spot the “big five” – buffalo, elephant, leopard, the black maned lion and the endangered, rare black rhinoceros – as well as zebra, wildebeest and gazelles. Overnight again at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge .
Day 10 • Departure
