Heritage Tour of Myanmar and Laos

OVERVIEW

The focus of this fourteen-day trip is on the cultural heritage of two of southeast Asia’s two most interesting countries – Laos and Myanmar. From the Pyu Ancient Cities near Mandalay in Myanmar, to the temples dotting the plains of Bagan, to the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, this journey through two Theravada Buddhist countries will not fail to enlighten all travellers.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 • Fly into Luang Prabang
Upon arrival at Luang Prabang airport you would be met and transferred to Amankata hotel where you will stay for the next 4 nights. You will have a vehicle and an English-speaking driver / guide at your disposal on each day in this wonderful city. Overnight at Amantaka .
Days 2, 3 and 4 • Explore Luang Prabang
You will have three full days at leisure in Luang Prabang to explore the town and the surrounding countryside. While no touring has been prearranged, the vehicle and driver will remain at your disposal between 09h00 and 19h00. Wildspace suggests visiting the Kuang Si Falls, the Old Quarter of Luang Prabang, the Golden City Temple (Wat Xieng Thong), taking the Shompoo Cruise, walking up Mount Phousi, viewing the Alms giving ceremony and a few other activities listed below. Overnight throughout at Amantaka .
Day 5 • Fly from Laos to Yangon
Today you will be transferred to Luang Prabang airport in time for the departure of your flight to Yangon. Upon arrival in Yangon airport, you will be met by a driver and privately transferred to The Governor’s Residence Hotel , where you will overnight.
Days 6 and 7 • In Yangon
You will have two full days to explore the Yangon at your own pace. This city is also called “Garden City of the East” because of its many parks and beautiful lakes. No sightseeing has been prearranged, but you will have the vehicle and guide at your disposal. Wildspace suggests seeing the beautiful Kandawgyi Lake, the Botataung Pagoda (which is hollow and through which you can walk), a visit to the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda which towers over all of Yangon. Overnight on both nights at The Governor’s Residence Hotel .
Day 8 • Fly to Bagan
You will have the morning in Yangon. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport in time to take a hopping flight to Bagan. Upon arriving at Nyaung U airport you will be met and transferred to the Aureum Palace Hotel where you will overnight.
Days 9 and 10 • Explore Bagan
You will have two days in which to take in the magnificent scenery in and around Bagan. No sightseeing has been prearranged, but you will have the vehicle and guide at your disposal. Wildspace suggests seeing the colourful Nyaung U Local Market, the Shwezigon Pagoda and its magnificent golden stupa, Wetkyi-in Gubyaukkyi (a cave temple with exquisite jatakas murals paintings), the elegant Htilominlo Temple (noted for its plaster carvings) and Tharaba Gate. Also worth visiting is Ananda Okkyaung, one of the few surviving brick monasteries from the early Bagan period, and Thatbyinnyu, the tallest temple in Bagan, rising to 61 metres. Overnight on both nights at the Aureum Palace Hotel .
Day 11 • Fly from Bagan to Mandalay
After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to the airport in time for your flight to Mandalay. After checking into your hotel, you will be taken on a tour to include the ancient royal capital of Amarapura. Here you will visit Mahagandayon monastery, which is a school for young monks, and the nearby U Bein bridge by boat at sunset. It is more than two centuries old and at 1.2 km is the longest teakwood span in the world. End your tour with a visit to Mandalay Hill for a view over the city and the Ayeyarwaddy River. Overnight at the Hotel by the Red Canal. .
Day 12 • Explore the Pyu Ancient City of Halin
Today you will take an early morning drive from Mandalay to Halin. Here you will be welcomed by Halin Heritage Trust community and then have an introduction to the Halin Archaeological Museum and U Naga Museum. You will explore the excavated Halin Pyu ancient city, before returning to Mandalay in the evening. Overnight again at Hotel by the Red Canal. .
Day 13 • Fly from Mandalay to Inle Lake
After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport in time for the flight to Heho. After checking into your hotel, you will drive to the magical Inle Lake. Located at an altitude of about 1000 meters above sea level, the lake is 22 km long and 11 km wide. Highlights include the fisherman rowing in the one-legged style that is characteristic of Inle Lake boatmen and gardens of grass and earth floating on the surface of this shallow lake – floating strips of ‘land’ for growing vegetables. Another attraction besides the enjoyment of the scenery is a visit to the Nge Phae Chaung monastery, the Phaungdaw U pagoda and perhaps a visit to a silk weaving factory. Overnight at Hotel by the Red Canal. .
Day 14 • Departure
After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred back to Heho airport in time for your flight to Yangon. Upon arrival in Yangon you will transfer onto your onward flight home.
